February marks the month of Love. Even before February 14, St. Valentine's Day, different kinds of chocolates, sweets, flowers and toys can already be bought at the right price. The malls are filled with delicacies and souvenirs shaped like hearts to celebrate this month's theme. We see the color RED on almost all the billboards for it is the color of LOVE. It is easy for us adults to become excited with Valentine's Day because we know we will get letters, chocolates, roses and little sweet nothings on this special day. The colorful and heart-shaped decorations fascinate children and even stimulate their curiosity.
One of the best ways to help our children understand Valentine's Day is to let them know that beyond material things that we can get, this special day is one way to show our love for others by giving something that money cannot buy. Before I entered pre-school, my mother would hand me scrap paper and coloring materials, which I would transform into letters and cards. Everyone in my family always got a Valentine card and I am thankful that my mother encouraged me to create thing on my own.
Until now, whenever I want to show my appreciation for someone, the first thing that comes to my mind is a specially written note or a carefully picked out card. This does not mean that it is wrong to buy gifts for our loved ones. This is just a reminder fo rall of us who may have forgotten that the best gift does not have to be very expensive but can be just a simple but sweet "thank you" that comes from the heart.
